Let\u2019s look at the very basics of how you\u2019ll go about letting the Spanish speaking world know just who you are.<\/p>\n

How boring would it be if the only way we said \u201chello\u201d to each other was by simply saying \u201chello\u201d? We have a wide range of choices we can select from when greeting other people–hi, good morning\/ afternoon\/ evening, hey, what\u2019s up?, and the list goes on.<\/p>\n
In Spanish you have more options than just \u201chola\u201d to choose from as well:<\/p>\n

- Buenos d\u00edas.<\/em> Good morning.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Buenas tardes. <\/em>Good afternoon\/ evening.<\/span><\/li>\n
- \u00bfQu\u00e9 tal?<\/em> How\u2019s it going? (A little more informal)<\/span><\/li>\n
- \u00bfQu\u00e9 hay?<\/em> (Loosely translated) What\u2019s up? (Very informal–use only with friends, family, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n
- Buenas. <\/em>Hello (something you\u2019ll hear a lot on the streets, or when you walk into shops, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/em>Yo me llamo\u2026<\/h2>\n
The logical next step, after saying \u201chello\u201d to someone would be to tell them your name!.You can\u2019t very well carry on a conversation with someone if you don\u2019t know who they are or let them know who you are. Once again, you have some options.<\/p>\n
- \n
- (Yo) me llamo\u2026-<\/em> The most commonly used, and literally translated means \u201cI call myself\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Soy*\u2026-<\/em> If you\u2019re a fan of brevity, this introduction is for you! It\u2019s like saying \u201cI\u2019m\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
- Mi nombre es-<\/em> The very practical \u201cMy name is\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/em>*This verb (which comes from ser<\/em>** one of the two ways in Spanish to say \u201cto be\u201d) will come in handy when introducing yourself, so make sure you keep it in the back of your mind, as we\u2019ll be seeing it again.<\/p>\n
**This verb is used with permanent<\/strong> qualities. I am short; I am American; I am awesome–these things won\u2019t change! Temporary<\/strong> qualities take the verb estar<\/em>. Estoy enfadada<\/em>-I am angry. Estoy triste<\/em>-I am sad, etc.<\/p>\n
Getting Deeper<\/h2>\n
While it is important to know someone\u2019s name in order to strike up a conversation with them, if that\u2019s all you say, the chat will be very short-lived. So, what else can you say about yourself?<\/p>\n
Soy de\u2026 Vivo en\u2026<\/h3>\n
The verb soy<\/em> was mentioned before, and means \u201cI am\u2026\u201d. If you add the (very useful to remember) preposition \u201cde\u201d after it, you\u2019re saying \u201cI am from\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
Soy de Chicago. <\/em>I am from Chicago.<\/p>\n
Just because you\u2019re from somewhere, doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that you live there. So, that\u2019s probably a good little piece of information to give someone about yourself. It\u2019s said vivo en<\/em> (I live in\u2026)Soy de Chicago, pero vivo en Madrid. <\/em>I\u2019m from Chicago, but I live in Madrid.<\/p>\n
Tengo X<\/em> a\u00f1os.<\/h3>\n
Saying your age is a little different. Surprisingly, you don\u2019t use ser<\/em> or estar<\/em> for this one. Pay attention here, because this is something that really gets a lot of English speakers in trouble. In Spanish you are not 20 years old… You have 20 years!! (I repeat you \u201chave<\/strong>x<\/em> years\u201d)Tengo 20 a\u00f1os-<\/em>I have 20 years (Meaning- I am 20 years old).<\/p>\n
Soy\u2026<\/h3>\n
Hey! There\u2019s that verb again! I told you it\u2019d be important.<\/p>\n
Another important thing you should be able to mention about yourself is what you do–as in \u201cwhat\u2019s your job\u201d?<\/p>\n
Soy un(a) estudiante\/ profesor(a)\/ abogado(a)\/ dentista<\/em>– I am a student\/ teacher\/ lawyer\/ dentist (notice that this last one doesn\u2019t change gender).<\/p>\n
Me gusta\u2026<\/h3>\n
Another useful expression you may want to know when introducing\/ talking about yourself is \u201cme gusta\u2026\u201d. This can be a tricky expression for English speakers, because it\u2019s construction is a little different than how it\u2019s said in English. Literally translated it means \u201cTo me it is pleasing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
So as not to get too complicated, let\u2019s just stick with using this construction with some verbs in infinitive to say \u201cTo me it is pleasing to do (insert verb here).\u201d<\/p>\n
Me gusta leer\/ jugar al baloncesto\/ cocinar\/ ir al cine<\/em>– I like to read\/ play basketball\/ cook\/ go to the movies.<\/p>\n
Examples<\/h2>\n
Let\u2019s take everything we\u2019ve seen and put it all together. Below you will find two examples of people introducing themselves. They are both native English speakers who live\/study in Spain. They will use the aforementioned phrases, as well as add in a few extra things about themselves.<\/p>\n
Self-Introduction in Spanish: Example 1<\/h3>\n
\u00a1Buenos d\u00edas! Soy Ana. Tengo veintisiete a\u00f1os. Soy de Chicago, pero ahora vivo en una ciudad de Espa\u00f1a que se llama Zamora. Soy profesora de ingl\u00e9s en un instituto. Al volver a los Estados Unidos, voy a seguir con mis estudios. <\/em><\/p>\n
Me gustar\u00eda hacer un doctorado en la literatura espa\u00f1ola. Pero, por ahora, estoy contenta de vivir en Espa\u00f1a y ir mejorando mi espa\u00f1ol y aprendiendo m\u00e1s de este pa\u00eds tan maravilloso. En mi tiempo libre me gusta leer, ver la tele, y pasar tiempo con mis amigos, mi marido y mi perro. <\/em>Estudio espa\u00f1ol porque la historia del pa\u00eds me fascina.
