If you know the rules for the Spanish future tense<\/u><\/a> and the Spanish imperfect tense<\/u><\/a>, then forming the conditional is really simple! Don\u2019t worry if you don\u2019t know them; we\u2019ll break it down.<\/p>\n

The conditional tense is formed by joining the future tense stem with the imperfect endings of -er<\/em> and -ir <\/em>verbs.<\/p>\n

The second is \u2018to have\u2019 in compound tenses.<\/p>\n

Another irregularity to remember with stems is that if a stem has an accent, the accent moves to the ending, e.g.<\/p>\n

When to use the conditional tense in Spanish<\/h2>\n

Often, the conditional tense is used with a condition, i.e. I would<\/strong> do something if<\/strong> certain conditions were met.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

These conditions are conjugated in the imperfect subjunctive. There\u2019s no need to go into the imperfect subjunctive in detail right now, but it\u2019s helpful to be able to recognise it, so here are the common endings. Each person has two different forms for you to choose from, but I suggest the -ra<\/em> form, as it\u2019s more common than the -se<\/em> form.<\/p>\n

In each case, you take off the infinitive ending, and add the new endings onto the stem. There are exceptions (this is Spanish, after all!) but let\u2019s not go into those right now!<\/p>\n
