You may not have heard of it before, but we can almost guarantee that you\u2019ve used it!<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Indicative\" data-id=\"8269\" width=\"677\" height=\"338\" title=\"Spanish indicative\" src=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Spanish-indicative.png\" data-width=\"677\" data-height=\"338\" data-init-width=\"1024\" data-init-height=\"512\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"tab-con-7\">Indicative: it\u2019s a mood not a tense<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Just for a change, this article isn\u2019t about a tense! The indicative is actually what we call a \u2018mood.\u2019 There\u2019s a difference between moods and tenses.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tenses tell you <strong>when<\/strong> something happens, e.g. past, present, future.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mood is less about time and more about the speaker\u2019s <strong>attitude<\/strong> toward what they\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Spanish has three moods:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Indicative (facts)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-subjunctive-guide\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Subjunctive<\/a> (doubts and hypotheticals)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/imperative-voice-spanish\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Imperative<\/a> (commands)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The indicative is the \u201cdefault\u201d mood, and the one that we use the most, so we\u2019ll be focusing on it today!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tab-con-1\">When the indicative is used<\/h2>\n<p>We use the indicative for facts, and things that are concrete and certain from the speaker\u2019s point of view. This could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Events that definitely happened in the past.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Events that have been scheduled and we 100% expect them to happen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Objective descriptions (things everyone can agree on, like the name of a road, rather than opinions that are open to debate).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Facts in general.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Things that are true from the speaker\u2019s point of view.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, a mood is an attitude, so the statement doesn\u2019t necessarily have to be true, but it has to be true in the speaker\u2019s world.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if I truly believed that humans had four legs each, I\u2019d use the indicative (\u2018<em>Estoy segura que cada ser humano tiene cuatro piernas<\/em>\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s inaccurate, of course, but in my (slightly messed up) mind, it\u2019s a true and concrete fact, so the indicative is needed.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Facts Magnifying Glass\" data-id=\"7973\" width=\"677\" height=\"301\" title=\"www.mydailyspanish.com Facts Magnifying Glass\" src=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/www.mydailyspanish.com-Facts-Magnifying-Glass.jpg\" data-width=\"677\" data-height=\"301\" data-init-width=\"1920\" data-init-height=\"855\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A method for choosing whether you need the indicative or not is to rule out the other moods:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span>1<\/span><span><strong>Is it a command?<\/strong> If yes, use the imperative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>2<\/span><span><strong>Does it contain a subjunctive trigger, such as doubt?<\/strong> If yes, use the subjunctive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>3<\/span><span>If you answered \u2018no\u2019 to both of the above, use the indicative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"tab-con-2\">Trigger Words and Phrases<\/h3>\n<p>Another great idea is to get to know the words and phrases that trigger the indicative. They can be:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verbs denoting speech, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>                    <span><em>decir<\/em> (to say)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>describir <\/em>(to describe)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>mencionar<\/em> (to mention)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>asegurar<\/em> (to assure)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Verbs of perception, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>                    <span><em>observar<\/em> (to observe)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>o\u00edr<\/em> (to hear)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>ver<\/em> (to see)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>notar<\/em> (to note)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Verbs used to talk about occurrences, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>                    <span><em>pasar <\/em>(to happen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>ocurrir<\/em> (to occur)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>suceder<\/em> (to happen)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Verbs of knowing, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>                    <span><em>saber<\/em> (to know)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>enterarse de<\/em> (to find out)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>aprender<\/em> (to learn)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Phrases of certainty<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>                    <span><em>estar seguro\/a que\u2026 <\/em>(to be sure that\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>es cierto que\u2026 <\/em>(it\u2019s certain that\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>es obvio que\u2026<\/em> (it\u2019s obvious that\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>                    <span><em>es claro que\u2026<\/em> (it\u2019s clear that\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"tab-con-3\">The tenses of the indicative<\/h2>\n<p>There are lots of ways to use the indicative mood. The following is a list of all the tenses (<strong>when<\/strong> something happens) that we can use in the indicative. You\u2019ve probably seen most of them before, and we have learning materials for each of them!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-present-tense\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Present<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The present tense in the indicative is used for descriptions, facts, and things that happen or are happening right now.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-361\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-361\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Jorge es una persona incre\u00edble.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Jorge is an incredible person.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Espa\u00f1a est\u00e1 en Europa.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Spain is in Europe.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Yo bebo mucho zumo de naranja.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I drink a lot of orange juice.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Los clientes est\u00e1n en camino<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">The clients are on their way.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-361 from cache -->\n<ul>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-imperfect-tense\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Imperfect<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We use the imperfect tense in the indicative to talk about what <strong>used to<\/strong> happen, or what <strong>was in progress<\/strong> (e.g. \u2018we were watching TV when the phone rang.\u2019) It\u2019s in the past and it definitely happened.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-362\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-362\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>De peque\u00f1o, le\u00eda mucho.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">When I was little, I used to read a lot.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>\u00a1Est\u00e1bamos durmiendo cuando el perro se meti\u00f3 en la cama con nosotros!<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">We were sleeping when the dog got into the bed with us!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-362 from cache -->\n<ul>\n<li><span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-preterite-tense\/\" style=\"outline: none;\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; text-decoration: underline;\">Preterite<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The preterite is another type of past tense in the indicative, and is used to talk about events that happen<strong>ed<\/strong> in the past and are over now.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-363\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-363\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>S\u00e9 que fuisteis al parque.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I know you went to the park.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Vi a mi ex. <\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I saw my ex.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-363 from cache -->\n<ul>\n<li><span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-perfect-tense\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Perfect<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The perfect is yet another indicative past tense! We use it to talk about what <strong>has happened<\/strong> in the recent (or sometimes more distant) past.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-364\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-364\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>He terminado mis deberes.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I\u2019ve finished my homework.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>En toda mi vida, he mentido solamente unas pocas veces.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">In all my life, I have only lied a few times.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-364 from cache -->\n<ul>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-perfect-tense\/#tab-con-2\" style=\"outline: none;\">Pluperfect<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The pluperfect is similar to the perfect, except it\u2019s kind of further back in the past. It refers to what <strong>had happened<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-365\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-365\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Sabrina estaba cansada porque hab\u00eda caminado 15 kil\u00f3metros.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Sabrina was tired because she had walked 15 km.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>\u00a1Yo no sab\u00eda que hab\u00edas tenido una relaci\u00f3n con Ronaldo!<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I didn\u2019t know that you\u2019d had a relationship with Ronaldo!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-365 from cache -->\n<ul>\n<li><span><strong><span style=\"display: inline-block; text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-future-tense\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Future<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So far, we\u2019ve said that the indicative is used for facts. But surely with the future, there\u2019s room for doubt? Yes, this is kind of true, but the thing to remember is that when we use the future indicative, we\u2019re talking about something that we fully expect <strong>will<\/strong> happen.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-366\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-366\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>El vuelo llegar\u00e1 esta noche.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">The flight will arrive tonight.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Ma\u00f1ana por la tarde te llamar\u00e9 si no te veo en clase.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Tomorrow evening I\u2019ll call you if I don\u2019t see you in class. (I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ll be in class, so there is room for doubt as to whether I\u2019ll call you. But what this sentence is saying is that there\u2019s one thing for sure: if I don\u2019t see you in class, then I will call you!)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-366 from cache -->\n<ul>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydailyspanish.com\/spanish-conditional-tense\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Conditional<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The conditional is an indicative tense that talks about something that hypothetically <strong>would<\/strong> happen.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-367\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-367\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Habr\u00eda sido mejor as\u00ed.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">It would have been better that way.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><i>Si tuviera* la oportunidad, viajar\u00eda a Per\u00fa.<\/i><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">If I had the opportunity, I would travel to Peru.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-367 from cache -->\n<p>*This is the imperfect subjunctive! There are a couple of tenses which have similar names in the indicative and the subjunctive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>The present indicative tense (we often drop the word \u2018indicative\u2019 and just call it the \u2018<strong>present tense<\/strong>\u2019) is different from the <strong>present subjunctive<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The imperfect indicative tense (we often drop the word \u2018indicative\u2019 and just call it the \u2018<strong>imperfect tense<\/strong>\u2019) is different from the <strong>imperfect subjunctive<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For clarification, we\u2019ve given you conjugation tables for regular verbs in these four tenses, so you can easily see the differences.
