To start with, you just need to know that there are certain situations and phrases<\/a> that trigger it! <\/p>\nIf you\u2019re new to this whole subjunctive thing, it\u2019s best to learn the triggers, and practice often! If you\u2019re more advanced, you might find that you\u2019re sometimes able to just ~feel~ when the subjunctive is needed.<\/p>\n We use the subjunctive when we\u2019re not talking about facts. It\u2019s for passing subjective opinions, or talking about things that are possible but not certain. There\u2019s a great acronym to help you remember the kinds of situations that require the subjunctive: UWEIRDO! <\/p>\n\n \n\n\n\t| U<\/td> | uncertainty\/possibility<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t| W<\/td> | wishes<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t| E<\/td> | emotions<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t| I<\/td> | impersonal expressions<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t| R<\/td> | recommendations<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t| D<\/td> | doubts<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t| O<\/td> | ojal\u00e1<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n For each letter, we\u2019ve given you some examples. The bold word in each case is the verb that\u2019s been put in the subjunctive.<\/p>\n Note that these phrases usually require:<\/p>\n \n- 1<\/span>Two subjects.<\/span><\/li>\n

(A specific guy, e.g. a friend who definitely exists. He happens to have blue eyes.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\tBusco un chico que tenga<\/Strong> ojos azules.<\/i> (Subjunctive)<\/td>| I\u2019m looking for a guy who has blue eyes. (There may or may not exist an appropriate guy with blue eyes, but I want a guy and I want him to have blue eyes.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\t
\nNo estoy de acuerdo con los que dicen eso.<\/i> (Indicative)<\/td> | I don\u2019t agree with those who say that. (There are definitely people who say that. (There might be some people who say that. If there are, then I don\u2019t agree with them.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n Another way we often use the subjunctive is when we\u2019re talking about a hypothetical situation in the future. Even if we expect it to happen, there is still a level of uncertainty.<\/p>\n The word \u2018cuando\u2019 is a big clue that we might need the subjunctive.<\/p>\n\n \n\n\n\tTe dar\u00e9 un abrazo cuando vengas<\/Strong> a mi fiesta.<\/i><\/td>| I\u2019ll give you a hug when you come to my party. (I\u2019m expecting you to come to the party, but I can\u2019t be certain that you won\u2019t change your plans.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\tSalgo cuando haya<\/Strong> terminado mis deberes.<\/i><\/td>I\u2019ll come out once I\u2019ve finished my homework. (It\u2019s unlikely but possible that I won\u2019t get my homework done!)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n- Wishes<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Use the subjunctive when talking about wishes, wants, and desires.<\/p>\n\n \n\n\n\tQuiero que vivas<\/Strong> conmigo.<\/td>| I want you to live with me.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\tEspero que sepas<\/Strong> lo especial que eres.<\/td>| I hope you know how special you are.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n The exception to this is if the subject of both parts of the sentence is the same person. You don\u2019t have to say, \u2018Quiero que yo cocine.\u2019 You can simply use the infinitive, and say, \u2018Quiero cocinar.\u2019<\/p>\n \n- Emotions<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The subjunctive is a great way to express when something makes you feel an emotion, for example when something annoys you, or makes you happy.<\/p>\n\n \n\n\n\tMe molesta que mastiques<\/Strong> con la boca abierta.<\/i><\/td>| It annoys me that you chew with your mouth open.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\tSiento que no te pueda<\/Strong> ayudar.*<\/i><\/td>| I\u2019m sorry that I can\u2019t help you.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n *The construction \u2018sentir que + subjunctive\u2019 is a way of expressing apology.<\/p>\n \n- Impersonal expressions<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Impersonal expressions are for stating an observation or opinion. Instead of starting with any old verb conjugated to a specific person, we start with the verb ser in the third person singular.<\/p>\n Usually the sentence structure is: \u2018es + adjective + que + subjunctive.\u2019<\/p>\n\n \n\n\n\tEs malo que robes<\/Strong>.<\/i><\/td>| It\u2019s bad that you steal.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n\tEs raro que Miguel no est\u00e9<\/Strong> en clase.<\/i><\/td>It\u2019s weird that Miguel isn\u2019t in class.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n- Recommendations<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

\u2018Ojal\u00e1\u2019 is an interesting word that has its roots in Arabic.
